In 1735, Henry McCulloch was granted 60,000 acres of land along the Black River, north of present-day Wilmington, NC, and he convinced many families in Northern Ireland to move to this area, including William Lewis, Jr. William Lewis, Jr. brought his family (wife's name unknown) to the Black River area of North Carolina in 1736 (New Hanover County - now Pender County). His five children were all born in Northern Ireland: James (b. 1723), Mary (b. 1724), Jane (b. 1726), Jacob (b. 1728), and William III (b. 1730).
