Thomas Lewis was born in upper New Hanover County, North Carolina c. 1749. He married Jane McGufford circa 1780, then moved to the Long Creek area in central New Hanover County. Thomas Lewis was granted several tracts of land in New Hanover County and he became a wealthy man. He was an outstanding citizen of his community and was continually involved in civic and governmental affairs. He served in the Militia during the Revolutionary War, and also served in the War of 1812, where he lost his life. Thomas and Jane had eight children. Seven of these moved to Mississippi soon after his death. The only one to remain in New Hanover County was William G. Lewis, of which the author has no further information. |
